Everyone needs to know the basics. If you've never held a Windows Phone before then you're potentially going to need a few pointers to get up and running. Check out the links below to see how to take care of some basics on getting your new Windows Phone working for you.

Add notes to your photos with Photo Marker for Windows Phone

Photo Marker

If you have ever had the need to mark-up or add notes to a photo, you should take a look at Photo Marker for Windows Phone. It is a simple way to write on your photos, save them for future use or share them as needed.
Photo Marker makes it easy to jot down a measurement, emphasize a portion of a photo or even highlight a portion of a map screenshot or document that you've scanned. Photo Marker may not be an app you use daily but it comes across as a handy Windows Phone photography app worth having around.
The interface with Photo Marker is not very complicated. You will be greeted with an option to select a photo to mark-up when you first launch the app. Photo Marker is also available from your Pictures Hub under the editing options. Once you have edited a photo, the main page of Photo Marker will display thumbnails of previously edited photos.

Photo Marker Main Page
The mark-up screen has three control buttons. There is an undo button, a marker button and a save button. The marker button will pull up your editing options that allow you to select the color, opacity and thickness of your marker. Once you have everything set, just tap the check mark on the settings window and you are ready to mark things up.
Images are saved at the original resolution and can be shared through the standard means on your Windows Phone (email, Facebook, Instagram, SMS, OneDrive, etc.) directly from the Photo Marker app.
Photo Marker editing
There is an option under the three-dot menu on the editing screen to show the picture information. You will need to install Photo-Info on your Windows Phone to use this option and view the image's EXIF file information. Photo-Info is a free app from the same developer. It would have been nice to have seen this feature built into Photo Marker to avoid the need to bounce back and forth between apps.

Overall Impression

Photo Marker is a Windows Phone photography app that may not appeal to everyone but does a nice job of allowing you to jot down notes on to or mark-up photographs. From noting how you want an image cropped to noting distance references to marking a spot on a screenshot of a map Photo Marker can come in handy from time to time.
I would have liked to have seen an option to add text to the photo and the ability to zoom into the photo to mark up finer details. I did find that a stylus helped with writing on images but your finger will do. Either way it looks like chicken scratch (scribbling) but you can do a decent, understandable job of things.
All in all, Photo Marker is a simple and effective way to mark-up your images. At last check the app is rated at 4.5 Stars in the Windows Phone Store, which is about where Photo Marker should be. The app is free with ad-support and through an in-app purchase of $1.49 you can have the ads removed.

Get your Windows 7 or 8.1 PC ready for the next Windows 10 preview with new tools

Windows 10

Microsoft won't launch the next major update for its Windows 10 Technical Preview until sometime in early 2015, but the company is now tempting PC users who have either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 with a special tool that will get their computer prepared for the next Windows 10 launch via an automatic update.
Basically, downloading and running this tool will check to see if your PC is ready to get the next version of Windows 10. If the tool senses the PC is prepared, it will show a message that states, "Your PC is now ready for the Windows Technical Preview. Windows Update will let you know when the latest preview build is ready to install on this PC in early 2015."
Microsoft could wait until January 21 to launch the next Windows 10 preview build. That's when the company is scheduled to hold a press event in Redmond, Washington where it will reveal more about their consumer and mobile plans for the OS.

Xbox Music Store, Video Store currently experiencing outages [update: it's all clear]

Update: The problems with Xbox Video and Xbox Music appear to be cleared up now.
Original Story: If you were looking forward to a relaxing Christmas Eve soaking up some entertainment via your Xbox One, you may be experiencing some difficulties. According to Microsoft's Xbox Live status page, the service is currently experiencing outages for both the Xbox Music Store and the Xbox Video Store on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and "other devices."
In addition to the above services, a few apps, such as IGN and MLG, appear to be experiencing problems loading content as well.
In a statement on the Xbox Live status page, Microsoft says it is currently investigating the issues:
Are you having a hard time viewing certain content in Xbox Music and Video, such as the Explore and Radio features? We're working to get this figured out ASAP! Thanks for your patience. We'll update you as soon as we know more.
It isn't yet clear what has caused the outages, but hopefully they will be cleared up quickly. If you've experienced an interruption in service, you can periodically check for updates from Microsoft at the source link below.

Turn your Xbox One into a fireplace, snowy forest or beach front for the festive season

Xbox One fireplace

If you fire up your Xbox One right about now you should be seeing an icon on the dashboard to turn your console into a roaring fireplace for the festive season. Or a snowy forest. Or a beach front with rippling water. Microsoft has added the trio of ambient themes to the console for you to use at your leisure. Or if you don't have a real fireplace.
It's not the first and only place Microsoft has done this either. The Bing homepage can also be turned into a flickering fire to brighten up your seasonal searching.
Happy holidays!
